Originally running for the Southern Pacific Red Electric Lines in the Bay Area, these huge cars were purchased by the USMC to transport shipyard workers to Terminal Island during the second world war. PE eventually purchased the cars after the war, and modernized them to match the fleet. So successful were the huge cars, that they were the last cars to survive until abandonment. A few of the cars were equipped with baggage sections, and commonly ran on the Catalina Steamship Terminal specials.
